Sometimes we know the result we want from a Formula and we need to find out the input value that produces the Formula result, then we must use the Goal Seek feature in Microsoft Excel. The Goal Seek feature calculates a value by performing What-If Analysis on a given set of Values. The Goal Seek feature lets us adjust a Value that is used in a Formula so we can achieve a specific Goal. It allows us to see how one Data item in a Formula impacts on another. It is a very useful feature, because we can adjust one Cell Entry to see the Result that we needed. To find out how to use the Goal Seek Feature in Microsoft Excel just keep on reading the post below.
Keep in mind, that for the Goal Seek feature, we need to have the following:
The Cell To Change In Order To Achieve The Target
In the next image, I have a list of my YouTube Viewers for four Semesters. I have already inserted the Data that I know for the first three semesters which are the following:
1st Semester: 1.002.500
2nd Semester: 2.250.358
3rd Semester: 1.890.054
In the Cell B7 I have entered a Sum function, summing up all the above Cells plus the blank one that I do not know the Data.
First of all we must select the Data tab as shown in the image below.
Then at the right area of the ribbon, we locate the Forecast area as shown below.
Once located, we select the What if Analysis drop-down menu, where we select the command Goal Seek where we are notified that we can Find The Right Input For The Value We Want.
Once the Goal Seek command is selected, the Goal Seek dialog box appears as shown below. The Goal Seek dialog box, is separated by the following areas:
Set Cell: We select the Cell B7 which contains the Sum Function.
To Value: We type in the number 7.500.000, which is the Goal that I have aimed for YouTube Viewers.
By Changing Cell: We select the Cell B5, which will change according to our Value, so it can give us the desired result.
Once we are finished with all the parameters, we just press the Ok button and wait. In the image below, we can see the Goal Seek Status dialog box. The Goal Seek Status dialog box is doing all the necessary calculations in order to reach our Goal.
Once the Goal Seek Status dialog box has finished, we can see the Result in the Cell B5, which is 2.357.088. The B7 Cell has now changed to 7.500.000, because the total Sum of all the Cells B2, B3, B4 and B5 make the Value of 7.500.000 which was our Goal.
